Redundancies coming to Serge Island with closure of St. Thomas plant

Sixty people will join the unemployment line following the announcement by Serge Island that its factory in Seaforth, St. Thomas will be closed.

It's parent company, the Seprod Group, says the factory, which produces a wide range of  milk, milk products and juices, will be shifted to St Catherine as it consolidates the dairy operations to improve productivity and reduce input costs.

Seprod CEO, Richard Pandohie, says he met with the 150 employees at Serge Island on Monday to apprise them of  the development. He expects to complete the move from St Thomas to St Catherine by March next year.

Some of  the workers whose position will be made redundant will be offered positions at the company's Bog Walk operations.
