Linvern Wright, President of the Jamaica Association of Principals of Secondary Schools, has given the thumbs down to the proposal for a return to the shift system in some schools when the new academic year begins in September.

Minister with responsibility for Education, Karl Samuda, on Tuesday said the ministry has been looking at several proposals, including the shift system, as it tries to comply with social distancing requirements.

Mr. Wright said, while he understands the position in which the Education Ministry finds itself, putting students on shifts will create another set of problems.

"The shift system itself creates contact issues also... because if it is that students are going to be changing, say a school is 2,000 students, you have a thousand students changing. Schools already don't have enough space for students to actually wait for the shift start. So a student who comes like a half an hour to an hour before would really be mixing with those students and that's something that you wouldn't want given what you understand the health protocols to be right now.

Mr. Wright said some schools are already considering the option of a shift system, given the size of their schools.

But Mr. Wright, who was speaking Wednesday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106, said further consultation is needed on the matter.

Aside from the shift system and staggered days, the Ministry of Education is also considering remote learning.

Mr. Wright said as the Education Ministry explores its options for the new academic year, there should be consultation.

He said the principals association was not asked to give feedback on the proposals prior to Mr. Samuda's disclosure on Tuesday.

Throughout this time, there has been some consultation but the kind that may be more helpful is something that I think we maybe need to look at.... Consulting and getting things right before they are announced for those who have to implement them is something that I think the ministry will have to improve on," he recommended.
