Significant road damage caused by Tropical Storm Grace

Stephen Shaw, Communication Manager, NWA
Tropical Storm Grace wreaked havoc on Jamaica's road network in the eastern half of  the island.

Stephen Shaw, Communication Manager at the National Works Agency Communication Manager, said the rains affected many roads in five parishes, with "over 40 reports of corridors... mainly in the eastern parishes - St. Andrew, St. Thomas, Portland, St. Mary, St. Catherine,"  being rendered impassable.

He some motorists ignored warnings not to use the Bog Walk Gorge as it was unsafe, as a result of which the Fire Brigade had to respond to distress calls and evacuate motorists trapped at that location.

According to Shaw, the NWA had sent out an advisory as early as 2:30 Tuesday afternoon warning motorists against entering the Bog Walk Gorge, because the Rio Cobre was in spate and the road was about to become impassable, "but clearly persons continue not to heed these warnings."
