The constituency by-elections in Trelawny Southern and St. Andrew North Western are expected to be a routine exercise as the People's National Party opted not to contest the polls.

Former House Speaker Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert is seeking to represent the constituency on behalf of the Jamaica Labour Party for a fifth consecutive term.

She resigned in September 2023 after the Integrity Commission ruled that she be charged for allegedly making false statements on her statutory declaration.

Independent candidate, Lloyd Gillings, squares off with Mrs. Dalrymple-Philibert.

At 11 a.m., the voter turnout in the constituency election was 9.43 per cent.

Meanwhile, Duane Smith is representing the JLP in St. Andrew North Western, a seat once held by his father, Derrick Smith, for almost three decades.

Mr. Smith said he is aware of the problems in the constituency and wants to address bad roads and other infrastructural issues.

He is being challenged by independent candidate Carl Marshall.

Rohan Banks, who was expected to challenge as another independent, withdrew from the contest on Wednesday.

Director of Elections Glasspole Brown said presiding officers at pollings stations in St. Andrew North Western will indicate to voters that Mr. Banks has withdrawn his candidacy.

Mr. Banks' name remains on the ballet because of his late withdrawal, but Mr. Brown pointed out that if voters still mark the 'X' beside his name, their ballot will be treated as spoiled.

The voter turnout in the constituency at 11 a.m. was 2.65 per cent.
