Small group of Cubans recruited to work in Jamaica's bauxite-alumina industry

By Latoya Nugent

The shortage of skilled labourers to work in Jamaica's bauxite-alumina industry has resulted in a group of Cubans being recruited to fill some gaps.

The labourers, who are on three-year contracts, were brought in by  the Jacden group of companies as part of an international public-private sector partnership.

Anserd Williams, CEO of Jacden, speaking at a welcoming ceremony for the Cuban workers, said three of them are already in Jamaica and another four will arrive soon.

Mr Williams noted that there is a shortage of professionals in the areas of heavy duty equipment repair, maintenance and operation in the bauxite-alumina industry.

He said Jacden first sought to find the expertise in Jamaica for its client, but was unsuccessful.

He also stressed that there is competition to recruit skilled labourers.
