St. Catherine Health Department to increase monitoring of water truck operators

Claudette McNee-Simmonds, Water Quality Officer at the St. Catherine Health Department

The St. Catherine Health Department says it will be increasing its monitoring and enforcement activities to ensure that operators of water trucks are conducting their business in compliance with the terms of their licence.

With sections of the island experiencing a reduction in rainfall, there has been an increase in the trucking of water to hard-hit areas.

Claudette McNee-Simmonds, Water Quality Officer at the St. Catherine Health Department, said the monitoring and enforcement are aimed at protecting the health of consumers by ensuring that the water they are getting is from reputable sources.

"Because I know...most of the trucks that are assigned to our parish, so when I see a new one, I would normally stop them and ask them for their sterilisation certificate. They should have that on their person to show me that the truck has been sterilised."

She added: "These fill up stations, they normally issue a receipt for the truck drivers when they are filled up. So, once I see them on the street, I stop, and I request the receipt and I see the receipt. So far, I have not met upon any truck that cannot produce a receipt."
