Surprised but not surprised - JLP newcomer Rhoda Crawford beats Bunting

Rhoda Crawford

Member of Parliament-elect for Manchester Central, the JLP's Rhoda Crawford, has said she was surprised by her huge win in Thursday's general election.

She defeated the People's National Party's Peter Bunting by 985 votes.

"I'm not surprised at the victory but I am surprised by the margin. I expected to win, perhaps within the 100-200 region, but not by 800-plus," Ms Crawford told Radio Jamaica News after her victory.

She said she worked with a clear strategy during her campaign.

The strategy was to move in to Bellfield to compromise the support for the opponent in Bellfield while building in our strong areas in the Royal Flat division, the Mandeville division and the Knock-Patrick division. We also had a very clear strategy in the Mandeville division. We realised in the past that the JLP enjoys the support of the middle class but it was not always reflected in the ballots and so we had a deliberate strategy to get the middle class out," she revealed.

Ms Crawford received 8,097 votes to Mr. Bunting's 7,112.
