A taskforce is to be established to address the safety and security concerns of returned residents in Jamaica.
This was announced following a meeting convened on Tuesday by Pearnel Charles Jr, Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It was attended by senior officials of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), the National Association of Returned Citizens, the Jamaica Association for Resettlement of Returned Residents, the British Jamaica Association and staff of the Diaspora Affairs Department of the Ministry.
According to Mr. Charles, the taskforce's main objective will be the implementation of strategies and solutions aimed at addressing the concerns of returned residents.
It will be mandated to work closely with Customs, the security forces and other stakeholders in creating measures that will improve the safety and security of returning residents.
The taskforce, which will be chaired by the State Minister, will comprise members from the Returning Residents Associations, the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Diaspora Affairs Department of the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
Tuesday's meeting was held in the wake of concerns about the safety of returning residents in Jamaica.
They were heightened following the recent murder of a British couple in Portland.
Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police Karina Powell-Hood, who attended Tuesday's meeting, said the JCF is to develop a standard operating procedure in addressing the concerns of returned residents.
She noted that the JCF currently has 19 community security officers as a measure aimed at increasing the safety and security of citizens, including those who are returning to Jamaica to live.
SSP Powell-Hood said the Force is compiling a Security and Safety Handbook for returned residents.
