The National Works Agency (NWA) says pedestrian movement on the May Pen Bridge in Clarendon, which is located along Main Street in the parish capital, will be restricted, starting on Wednesday, April 27.
The bridge has been closed to vehicular traffic since March 28 for repairs to failed steel members. Pedestrians however, have been allowed to use the structure.
Stephen Shaw, the Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, says the process to hoist the bridge to allow for failed members to be removed will start at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday.
The hoisting will be done in phases, the first of which will be undertaken over the next three days.
Mr. Shaw says during the hoisting process, members of the public will not be allowed to use the bridge.
Pedestrian traffic will be allowed to use the bridge this weekend, but the restrictions will be back in effect on Monday, May 3, for at least a week.
Motorists travelling from the direction of Mineral Heights or Palmer’s Cross towards the town centre should use the alternative route, Chenton Road, Bustamante Highway, Glenmuir Road, Anderson Drive then onto the town centre. The reverse obtains for motorists travelling from the town centre in the direction of Mineral Heights or Palmer’s Cross.
