Tension at LIME as company boycotts meeting

Tension is reportedly rising at LIME Jamaica over the plan to make close to 300 positions redundant, starting next month. A meeting called by the Ministry of Labour was reportedly cancelled Wednesday after no representative of the company showed up.

Garfield Harvey, vice president of the University and Allied Workers' Union (UAWU), told RJR News that the workers have been informed of the development and will now decide the next move.

“The fact is that LIME is under the law an essential service and therefore when there is an industrial dispute at an essential service, (and) Ministry invites you to a meeting, you are obliged to turn up. LIME has a whole department full of lawyers that they could have sent. The workers have been informed by the unions about the company’s behaviour and we will probably be demonstrating our feeling on the matter in the coming days,” said Mr Harvey.
