Tertiary institutions to use face-to-face and remote learning in new semester

Professor Colin Gyles and Professor Dale Webber

Tertiary institutions will be using both face-to-face and remote learning when the new semester begins.

The administrators of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona and the University of Technology (UTech) are working for a September opening based on guidance from the Ministry of Health.

The institutions are facing serious financial challenges as the spending power of Jamaicans has been eroded.

Administrators have been trying to find creative ways to have students complete their courses of study and matriculate.

Professor Colin Gyles, Acting President of UTech, outlined the institution's plans, noting that "online will be the way to go for module courses that can be offered online; those that cannot be offered online, we will facilitate these being offered face-to-face via the physical distancing arrangements in place."

He urged students not to postpone their studies but to seek support from the Students' Loan Bureau.

Professor Dale Webber, Principal of the UWI Mona, said the UWI will also continue online learning for some courses mixed with face-to face classes.

However, he said the university's core focus at the moment is to complete the current semester so the present batch of final year students can graduate on schedule.

Professor Webber and Professor Gyles were guests on the RJRGLEANER Group virtual town hall meeting on Thursday.
