Trump tells state leaders to use force to regain control over George Floyd protests

US President Donald Trump has urged the nation's governors to use force and take back the streets after parts of the United States descended into chaos for a sixth night over the death of George Floyd.

According to the Washington Post, during a conference call on Monday, Mr. Trump berated the state leaders, calling them weak and urged them to dominate protesters.

Thousands of people were arrested across the country over the weekend.

More than half of the nation's governors have called in the National Guard to help quell the unrest, and at least 45 million Americans were under a curfew Sunday night.

In some cities, law enforcement officers were seen marching and kneeling with protesters.

Elsewhere, police in riot gear continued to increase their use of force, which added to the disorder.

Kentucky's Governor Andy Beshear has ordered a state investigation after a man was fatally shot during a confrontation with Louisville police and the National Guard.

Derek Chauvin, the since-fired 44-year-old police officer involved in the George Floyd incident, has been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

He appeared in court Monday and was released on US$500,000 bail.

He is to return to court on June 8.

Meanwhile, thousands of protesters chanting "I can't breathe" gathered in central Amsterdam on Monday.

Around 10,000 filled Amsterdam's Dam square, ignoring calls for social distancing and shouting "Black lives matter" and "No justice, no peace".

The crowd blocked traffic, but no violence was reported.

In New Zealand, protests were held in multiple locations.

Thousands held demonstrations and vigils in several places including Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.

On the weekend, there were similar scenes in the UK, Germany, Poland, Australia, Canada, Italy and Denmark.
