Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett says although the decision to close Jamaica's borders to UK passengers for two weeks will be hard on stakeholders, it was necessary to manage the uncertainty caused by the new variant of COVID-19.
In an interview with the media in Montego Bay on Tuesday, Mr. Bartlett said the government did the right thing based on the circumstances.
"If we err, we rather to err on the side of caution and the protection of our people," Mr. Bartlett noted.
The minister is optimistic that the decision to close the borders will not result in tourists turning away from Jamaica.
"What we have to recognise is that the more we protect our own flank by way of following the protocols...once we do that and we are not the cause of any undue concern in the marketplace, then the traffic will come to us," he insisted.
