Veteran journalist and University lecturer John Maxwell is dead.
Mr Maxwell died on Friday afternoon from respiratory failure at his home in St Andrew. He was 76.
His career in journalism spanned more than 60 years during which he worked in both the print and electronic media.
He entered the profession in 1952 when he joined the Gleaner Company. On leaving the Gleaner after three years, Mr Maxwell worked with the weekly newspaper, the Public Opinion and later moved onto the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC).
He worked at the British Broadcasting Corporation from 1967 to 1971 but returned to Jamaica for the 1972 General Election in which he unsuccessfully ran for the People's National Party (PNP) against the Jamaica Labour Party's (JLP) Edward Seaga for the West Kingston seat.
In recent years, Mr Maxwell was a columnist with the Jamaica Observer newspaper.
He was also a lecturer at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus.
