Court denies effort to block holding of Guyana Press Association election

An application to block the Guyana Press Association from holding its elections was denied over the weekend.

The application had asked the court to consider that the applicant, Mikhail Rodrigues, is a journalist and that he had sought membership of the Association.

The judge described the application made by Rodrigues as being wholly misconceived.

The Chief Justice said the application was not urgent and that, having read the constitution of the Guyana Press Association, that the entity is not a corporate or any kind of registered entity that has personality that can sue or be sued.

The Chief Justice also stressed that the respondents are not amenable to judicial review as they are private persons, who happen to be the executive of a private body.
