Wehby to mediate in purse negotiations between horsemen and SVREL

Report by RJRGLEANER Group Sports Reporter Denise Walters

Mediator, Senator Don Wehby has been asked to step in following first round purse negotiations between the horsemen group at Caymanas Park and promoting company, Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited (SVREL).

This announcement was made following a meeting with stakeholders on Wednesday morning. Stakeholders at Caymanas Park agreed to renegotiate the purse structure currently in place, following a meeting with Minister of Finance, Dr Nigel Clarke in May.

Members of the negotiating team, trainer Ian Parsard, owner Andrew Azar and United Racehorse Trainers Association of Jamaica (URTA) president Patrick Smellie gave stakeholders an update at where the negotiation stands.

The current arrangement, signed in 2022 by the horsemen group and the promoters, reflects 49% of gross gaming revenues (GGR). This means after sales and payout to punters, 49% of what is left goes to purse payment.
