The Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority says it has taken the necessary steps to position Jamaica's agricultural commodities within the realm of cutting-edge technology.
It says this is in keeping with the rapid rate at which the global agricultural space is advancing.
JACRA is developing a blockchain-run platform dubbed "Verified & True" for launch and public use early next year.
The Verified & True platform will provide digital infrastructure that enables end-to-end traceability for Jamaica's prized agricultural commodities: coffee, cocoa, coconut and the spices, namely pimento, nutmeg, ginger, and turmeric.
JACRA says the platform will be launched and made available for public use in 2025.
At launch, users from across the world will be able to scan QR codes placed on products made from the commodities and review and interact with, pertinent farmer and farm history & information, proof of product origin and much more.
This forms part of the first steps to elevating the standing of Jamaica's agricultural commodities on the international market, ensuring authenticity, transparency, consumer trust and brand protection throughout the entire value chain.
Acting Director General of JACRA Wayne Hunter says as Jamaica continues to enjoy economic gains and global recognition for its agricultural commodities the digital system will seek to strengthen the foundations of love, trust and respect consumers across the world have built with 'Brand Jamaica'.
Agriculture Minister Floyd Green says the platform will allow for better protection of local brands, while creating more equitable supply chains rooted in Jamaican origins.
