Government grants UWI J$200M to set up Fiscal Research Centre

The Government is providing a J$200-million grant for the University of the West Indies to establish a Fiscal Research Centre.

Minister of Finance & the Public Service, Dr. Nigel Clarke says the provision is a special grant in addition to the usual subvention of $200 million.

Approval for the disbursement was given last Friday, October 18.

The Centre will foster innovation and collaboration in the areas of public finance, economic research, policy design, and institutional reform for countries across the Caribbean and beyond.

It is also intended to teach and share knowledge on public financial management techniques and practices.

Additionally, Dr. Clarke says the Centre will support the development of policy, based on the research conducted.

The Inter-American Development Bank and the University of Ottawa's Institute of Fiscal Studies and Democracy are also supporting the launch of the Fiscal Research Centre at UWI, Mona.

The IDB committed US$400,000 to support joint research, publications, teaching, and training initiatives for students and practitioners across the region.

This ground-breaking partnership among all four institutions is intended to foster innovation and collaboration in the areas of public finance, economic research, policy design, and institutional reform for countries across the Caribbean and beyond.
