The government has started wage negotiations with public sector unions as the current three-year period will come to an end on March 31 this year.
The unions are reported to have laid on the table, increased salaries, adjustments to allowances, and improved working conditions for thousands of government employees.
Finance Minister Fayval Williams says compensation for government employees, estimated at $495.8 billion, has been included in the 2025-2026 fiscal package with the financial year starting on April 1.
Income tax threshold increase
In the meantime, the government has announced a raft of measures aimed at improving the socio-economic situation of Jamaicans, including increasing the income tax threshold to $2 million over a three-year period.
The Finance Minister said the income tax measure would go into effect from April 1, this year, without indicating the cost of the initiative to the treasury.
She told legislators that the threshold would first rise to J$1.8 million, increasing slightly to $1.9 million, and finally to $2 million.
