Manufacturers and JPS to discuss power weaning as energy costs surge

Vice President of the Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association (JMEA) and Chairman of its Energy Committee, Cecil Foster, says members of the sector will meet with the Jamaica Public Service Company on Monday to discuss strategies to reduce energy costs.

Speaking on Radio Jamaica's Real Business, Mr. Foster said the talks will focus on power weaning, the generation of electricity in one location, and its transmission for use in another area.

He noted that this is one of several measures being explored by manufacturers to manage rising energy costs driven in part by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Mr. Foster added that companies are also increasing investments in renewable energy as they seek to improve efficiency and remain competitive.

He called for the Development Bank of Jamaica and commercial banks to provide more affordable financing to help manufacturers retrofit their operations, warning that high energy costs pose a serious threat to the sector's survival.
