Gov’t to dismantle commodity boards

Dr. Christopher Tufton, the Minister of Agriculture Minister, says the Government will be gradually dismantling commodity boards, and replace them with a new structure which will have minimal state involvement.

He saysd there will be maximum private sector participation and Jamaican brand protection.

According to Dr. Tufton, entities such as the banana board, the coffee board and the cocoa board are outdated.

While conceding that this structure worked in the past, when commodities were being exported to Europe for set prices and set quantities, he contends that the regime has changed.

The Ministry has undertaken the study of a major project towards a restructuring exercise and consultations are being held with various stakeholders.
