Jamaica is being positioned as a supplier of various goods and produce to the cruise shipping industry.

The largest global cruise company, Carnival Corporation, says Jamaica is well positioned to add to its value chain, based on the proximity to the company's South Florida base.

Jamaica is one of the most sought after destinations for tourism, resulting in cruise lines calling on local ports for much of the year.

Javonnte Anyabwele, Vice President in charge of Strategic Sourcing at Carnival Corporation, said the company makes up about 54 per cent of the global cruise market.

The VP stressed the need for consistent supply and quality from local suppliers who wish to get into the system.

Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett said Jamaica has to position itself in the supply value chain, of which a large chunk is food.

"Forty-two per cent of the expenditure of the visitor is on food. And I was just looking through to see what happens with cruise, for example. Here in the Caribbean, there's a demand for food in 2022, $5.3 billion. And it is expected that by 2033, the demand will be US$17.3 billion for just food alone," he noted.

They were both speaking on day one of a two-day business opportunity meeting held in Kingston with Carnival Corporation and local manufacturers.
