Russian fuel supply heading towards Cuba

A tanker, believed to be carrying Russian diesel fuel, is sailing toward Cuba, even as mounting U.S. pressure on the country's fuel supply has forced other shipments to be aborted or cancelled.

Maritime data show the vessel, Sea Horse, is expected to arrive in early March, carrying much-needed fuel at a time when Cuba is grappling with a deepening energy crisis, including blackouts and severe shortages of fuel for transportation, power generation and daily needs.

The shipment puts sanctions imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump to the test.

Washington has tightened restrictions on oil reaching Cuba and threatened tariffs on any country that supplies fuel to the country, actions that have led major suppliers like Mexico and Venezuela to halt their deliveries.

Cuba relies heavily on imported fuel, as domestic production covers only a small portion of its needs. It's unclear whether the Sea Horse will be able to reach Cuban ports, as U.S. forces have already seized at least nine vessels suspected of transporting sanctioned oil.
