University of Technology Jamaica (UTech) has announced that it is moving to significantly reduce its monthly electricity bill through the installation of a two-megawatt solar power system at its Papine and satellite campuses. This, the university says, is projected to cut its monthly electricity costs from approximately $15 million to $7.5 million.
The system will include optional battery storage and project completion is set for next January.
The procurement process is being funded by the Government of Jamaica and will be open to international tendering and competitive bidding. Bids for the project are scheduled to close on June 30, with a contract expected to be awarded in November this year.
The university says it will not be required to pay upfront capital costs for the project. Instead, the successful bidder will finance the installation initially and recover the investment over an agreed period.
