Some 64 schools are facing the possibility of a delayed start to the new academic year after they suffered severe damage by Hurricane Beryl, two weeks ago.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness gave a breakdown of the damage to schools in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, revealing that the cost of repairs will amount to $1.9 billion.

"We're going to work very hard to ensure that no school is affected in terms of not being able to be reopened, but the damage that has been identified for 64 schools could potentially affect their reopening," he noted.

The Prime Minister said 57 schools have been moderately damaged and will require significant repairs, but are likely to be operational by the time schools are reopened.

Ninety-one schools have suffered relatively minor damage and can operate while repairs are done.
