All polling stations open as voting proceeds smoothly in Local Government Election

Voting in Jamaica's Local Government Election has been underway for several hours and the Electoral Office of Jamaica is reporting that all polling stations are open and operational.

Ninety-eight per cent of polling stations opened on time at 7 o'clock while the other two per cent opened before 7:30 a.m.

Some 6,726 polling stations have been opened in 2,148 locations.

The Local Government Election is the first since 2016.

More than two million electors are eligible to vote in what is expected to be a close contest between the Jamaica Labour Party and People's National Party.

A total 499 candidates are in the race, with 496 contesting the 228 Electoral Divisions and three vying for Mayor of Portmore.

Voting continues until 5:00 p.m.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party and Opposition Leader Mark Golding, President of the People's National Party have already voted.
