Cabinet has approved the introduction of the unemployment insurance benefit, which will be added to the suite of provisions under the National Insurance Scheme.

The new benefit will serve as a guaranteed safety net for all employees who contribute to the NIS, except for self-employed persons.

Speaking Thursday on TVJ's Smile Jamaica, Minister of Labour and Social Security, Pearnel Charles Jr. explained that the level of payout will be based on an individual's earnings.

"It will be a percentage of it to afford you an opportunity to be financially stable. It's not expected for you to have your same salary because, again, that would be determined on what level you are in terms of your tier. But no, it will be a percentage offered to you."

The minister did not share the percentage, noting that those details are still being decided on.

"Again, we have to make sure persons don't think that this is an opportunity for you to jump on a train and stay on this train for a year; you don't have to work. No, we want you to get back into the work," he said.
