The two candidates vying for the Morant Bay Division in the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation are promising improvements for residents.
Jamaica Labour Party candidate Winston Downie and his People's National Party counterpart Rose Marie Shaw were duly nominated to contest the November 22 by-election.
Mr. Downie, a high school vice principal and newcomer to representational politics, said he plans to focus on the continued development of the parish capital.
"It's all about continuous development. Morant Bay is in a transformation mode. You can see there is no longer the old tyre factory. It's now the urban centre, soon to be completed; the historical park, that is at the Paul Bogle Square; the museum will be there, and so many developments, even where we stand," he outlined.
Meanwhile, the PNP's Rose Marie Shaw, a businesswoman who crossed the floor from the JLP, said she has a laundry list of priorities.
"The first priority is a central system for the town of Morant Bay. We have always been agitating for that. And it is non-existent. So that is very, very important. Also the recreational park; the former councillor started a programme and I intend to continue and build on that. The gullies, the drains, street lights, the community centre at Lyssons that has been run down, we need to deal with that," he pointed out.
