Councillor cites road safety concerns along Paul Bogle Highway at Albion, St. Thomas

By Henry Shirley

Councillors at the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation are calling for the urgent installation of safety measures along a section of the Paul Bogle Highway in Albion, in light of growing concerns about possible loss of lives and pedestrian injuries.

The councillors say the roadway has become a death trap, particularly near a gas station, due to the absence of a proper pedestrian crossing and traffic light.

The issue was raised during Tuesday's meeting of the Corporation's Physical Planning, Environment and Development Committee.

Councillor Dean Jones of the Trinityville division, who said he regularly uses the roadway, described the location as extremely dangerous.

Councillors are proposing several safety measures, including a pedestrian crossing, rumble strips, improved road signage and a flashing amber light or traffic signal to alert motorists.

One councillor suggested that an overhead pedestrian crossing may be the best solution, while others believe rumble strips would force motorists to reduce their speed.
