Laurette Adams-Thomas, CEO, CPFSA

The Child Protection and Family Services Agency says it is seeking to revamp its screening and hiring procedures to ensure the moral soundness of those hired as caregivers.

Chief Executive Officer, Laurette Adams-Thomas revealed on Saturday that the move forms part of the agency's efforts to enhance child safety and security measures at its child care facilities.

Mrs Adams-Thomas said the state agency will also be strengthening several other strategic priorities, including improvements to architectural designs "to ensure that they meet disability-friendly standards."

"Child-friendly spaces" are also being created in each parish and workforce capacity is  being strengthened, she added.

The CPFSA is also working to improve the adoption process in Jamaica, according to Mrs Adams-Thomas, with efforts being made to reduce the time it takes to for a child to be adopted, "by streamlining procedures, strengthening accountability, and amending the Adoption Act."

She disclosed that an early warning system will be introduced to "detect and respond to children who are at risk..."

Mrs Adams-Thomas was speaking during the CPFSA's 20th anniversary church service at Portmore Seventh-day Adventist Church.
