Curfew imposed in Green Island, Hanover

By Kimone Witter

A 48-hour curfew has been imposed in sections of Green Island, Hanover as a result of a deadly gang conflict.

The latest upsurge in violence has left at least two people dead and three with bullet wounds.

The curfew began at 6 p.m. Monday and will remain in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The boundaries are: NORTH at Haughton along the Green Island main road to the Lobster Smokehouse, EAST along an imaginary line from Lobster Smokehouse to the Baccadia community, SOUTH along the Baccadia main road to the Salt Spring roundabout and WEST from the Salt Spring roundabout to Haughton.

The shootings stem from last week's killing of Wayde Phillips, also known as 'Scatta', along the Seven Mile Beach in Negril, Westmoreland.

Another man was shot and wounded.

The police say Mr. Phillips, who is from Logwood, Hanover, was a member of the Antsman Gang which is involved in the conflict.

Since then, there have been two reprisal attacks - one occurring on Friday, in which two men were shot in the vicinity of the Green Island Police Station. One of the men died on the station's compound.

In the other shooting Monday night, a man was wounded.

The curfew has been imposed to stem the bloodletting among the gangs operating in Green Island and Logwood.
