Customs warns against unlawful gun importation after recent seizures

By Kimone Witter

Since April, Jamaica Customs Agency has seized ten illegal firearms and gun related items during routine operations at warehouses at Kingston's Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA).

The agency says, among the items seized were seven rifle scopes and two rifle stocks.

The disclosure from Jamaica Customs comes with a warning for the public to desist from unlawful importation of firearms and accessories through courier companies.

The agency says the recent seizures have highlighted attempts to smuggle illegal weapons into the country through these companies, which pose a grave threat to public safety and national security.

It says, in addition to enhancing vigilance at ports of entry, there have been increased efforts to leverage advanced technology and intelligence sharing mechanisms to detect and intercept illicit shipments.

Importers are also being urged to adhere strictly to the laws and regulations governing the importation of firearms and related items.
