Senior Superintendent Wayne Josephs and Dr Lucien Jones
The death toll from Monday's two-vehicle collision in Bluefields, Westmoreland has increased to five.
The crash involved a public passenger vehicle and a truck.
Three of the passengers in the Toyota Noah taxi died at the scene while two died at hospital.
It's reported that, about 3:30 in the afternoon the driver of the taxi attempted to overtake another vehicle and crashed into an oncoming truck.
The taxi then ran off the road into bushes where it hit a tree.
Head of the Westmoreland Police, Senior Superintendent Wayne Josephs told Radio Jamaica News that four females and a male who were in the taxi are among the victims.
They included "a mother and a son, and a mother and a daughter," he said.
The police are now searching for the driver of the taxi involved in the fatal crash, after he reportedly fled the scene after the crash.
Vice Chair of the National Road Safety Council Dr Lucien Jones has characterised the five deaths in the Bluefields crash as devastating.
He said that despite making some progress, the government will have to redouble its efforts to ensure the Safe Systems approach is fully implemented.
