Director of Elections Glasspole Brown is hoping for a good turnout of voters for the February 26 Local Government Election.

He says the pool of Election Day workers have been selected, including poll clerks, supervisors and reserves.

"I can hope and expect that the individuals who are registered on the voters' list will turn out and we should then hopefully have a better turnout than what we had in 2016," he said.

After the last local election in November 2016, the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) reported a voter turnout of just over 30 per cent.

The EOJ said 499 candidates were nominated Thursday to contest the February 26 poll.

This includes 496 candidates vying for seats in the 228 Electoral Divisions islandwide and three candidates for the seat of Mayor in the Municipality of Portmore.

The Jamaica Labour Party and the People's National Party have each entered a full slate of candidates to contest the polls in the 228 Electoral Divisions and in the Portmore Municipality mayoral race.

The PNP's Leon Thomas, the JLP's Markland Edwards and independent candidate Howard Hamilton have been nominated to contest the mayoral election.

The EOJ said 37 independent candidates were nominated to contest the election in 34 Electoral Divisions, while four nominated candidates represent the United Independents' Congress.
