Senators have paid tribute to the policeman who was killed during a shootout with gunmen in Sligoville, St. Catherine on Friday morning.
Another officer was wounded and is in critical condition in hospital.
Speaking on behalf of the government during Friday's sitting of the Upper House, Senator Marlon Morgan said the incident underscores the hazards of the job of policemen and women.
"It underscores the challenges that our policemen and women confront and have to grapple with in the line of duty, as they seek to make Jamaica a safe place. And as a Senate, I would want for us to observe a moment of silence momentarily, but we have to register as the Upper House, and as law-abiding citizens of this country, our debt of gratitude to the men and women of the Constabulary and our immense grief at the loss of the officer," he asserted.
Leader of Opposition Business, Senator Donna Scott Mottley, joined in extending condolences to the family of the fallen officer and the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
"When a police officer is shot down, cut down in the line of duty, the impact on the others is very palpable. I also want to wish the police officer who is undergoing surgery - I have no indication of his present condition - just that everything will go well and that there will be a speedy recovery. Of course, Mr. President, we understand, respect, and appreciate the police in the lawful execution of their duty, which is to serve and protect. And when we see a member who has lost his life or her life in that way, the country must respond," she said.
The moment of silence requested by Senator Morgan was delayed until a later date.
