Excellence Oyster Bay resort offers increased wages to workers following protest

A day after employees of Excellence Oyster Bay resort in Falmouth, Trelawny, walked off the job to demand better wages and improved working conditions, the company has agreed to increase their salaries.
 
The company has approved a 10 per cent increase on the current salary effective immediately. It will be reflected next fortnight.
 
The company has also approved a 10 per cent increase in the amount of the gratuity.
 
The company will give all employees the choice between a work week of five days with two days off, or a work week of six days and one day off.
 
Excellence Oyster Bay adds that a permanent contract will be granted to all employees who have been with the company for three years.
 
This permanent contract will be granted from next week.
 
As part of the new agreement, the company has also agreed to relocate the locker and changing room area to the property by next year, thus avoiding the need for transportation between Hope Gate and the hotel.
 
The company will provide new uniforms to employees during the first two weeks of December 2024.  
 
Employees with perfect attendance every fortnight will be paid a bonus of $3,140.
 
The company will also facilitate salary deductions from employees' loans granted by financial institutions or businesses previously approved by Excellence.
 
According to the agreement, Oyster Bay is committed to paying for all overtime hours worked.
 
The HR department will create a direct communication channel with all employees to enable them to freely express any disagreement or problem they may have in their daily work.
 
The deal was agreed after managers flew into the island on Monday to deal with the crisis.
 
The government has been encouraging resort operators to improve dialogue with their workforce in order to stem the rising tide of strike action by hotel employees which is threatening to impact the upcoming winter tourist season.
