Final counting of ballots in St. Ann Northeastern by-election set for today

The final counting of the ballots from Monday's by-election in the constituency of St Ann North Eastern will commence today.

The Electoral Office of Jamaica says the preliminary counting of ballots indicates an estimated voter turnout of 11.6 per cent.

The Jamaica Labour Party's Matthew Samuda won the election, on the preliminary count, with 4,838 votes.

Mr Samuda interpreted his victory as an expression of confidence by the electors and pledged to begin work to develop the constituency immediately.

Independent Candidate David Anderson picked up 222 votes while Chase Neil of the United Independent's Congress received 30 votes.

The main opposition People's National Party boycotted the election.
