Flash Flood Warning still in effect for St. Mary, Portland, St. Thomas

By Halshane Burke

The Met Service says low-lying and flood-prone areas of St. Mary, Portland and St. Thomas remain under a Flash Flood Warning until 5 p.m. Thursday.

It has discontinued the Flash Flood Watch for the rest of the island.

A Flash Flood Warning means flooding has been reported or will occur shortly.

Motorists and pedestrians should not attempt to cross flooded roadways or other low-lying areas as strong currents are likely.

Residents in low-lying areas should be on the alert for rising waters and be ready to move quickly to higher ground.

The Broad Trough across the central Caribbean continues to produce a large area of organised showers and thunderstorms across the region including Jamaica.

Rainfall observations indicate that moderate to heavy showers affected northeastern parishes since Wednesday morning and light to moderate showers elsewhere.

The forecast is for mostly cloudy skies with periods of showers and thunderstorms to continue across the island especially across eastern parishes through to Thursday evening.

Due to the periods of rainfall over the last few days, there is a high
possibility of ground saturation, as a result, flooding and landslides are likely to occur across eastern parishes.

Additionally, fishers on the cays and banks, especially on the south coast, are urged to exercise extreme caution as sea conditions will continue to deteriorate in the vicinity of showers, thunderstorms and strong winds.
