Former Mayor of Lucea summond to meeting of PNP's integrity committee

Former Mayor of Lucea Shernette Haughton who is under pressure to resign as Councilor for the Green Island Division has been summoned to a special meeting of the People's National Party (PNP) Integrity Commission.

Haughton will be asked to appear along with her attorney to answer questions.

In a release on Tuesday, the PNP said the Integrity Commission has been mandated to provide a report to the Party's Executive by April 20.

The report will form part of the process to determine disciplinary actions that may be required.

These include whether. Haughton will be deemed eligible to contest any future elections on a PNP ticket.

The Party reaffirmed its commitment to modern standards of probity, transparency and good governance and said in this case it appears the standards were not achieved.

The party said it considered recent reports from the Office of the Contractor General (OCG) at the meeting of the Executive Committee on Monday.

The reports deal with investigations into activities at the Hanover and St. Thomas Parish Councils.

A special investigation by the OCG revealed there was nepotism in the award of government contracts at the Hanover Parish Council while Haughton was Mayor.

St. Thomas Parish Council  - OCG findings

Meanwhile, the PNP Executive says it also reviewed the findings of the OCG regarding the St. Thomas Parish Council.

It says while the Council was controlled by members of the Jamaica Labour Party, it believes the OCG report highlights the need for strengthening of the systems and processes at parish councils.

The OCG has called for immediate action to be taken against the St Thomas Parish Council, in relation to the award of contracts totaling millions of dollars.

In its report, tabled in the House of Representatives last week, the OCG also called for the intervention of the Auditor General.
