Deputy Superintendent of Police Noel Daley
There is growing concern that gang violence in some communities in the Kingston Western police division is spilling over into schools.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Noel Daley, Territorial Officer for the Kingston Western police division, the police have noticed a hike in violent behaviour across four high schools in the division.
As a result, he said the police and other stakeholders have been joining forces in an attempt to shield children from violent activities.
DSP Daley disclosed that several students have also been arrested in relation to violent incidents.
Girls in gangs
DSP Daley revealed as well that there has also been a trend of girls forming gangs in schools, but he quickly added that "it's not as dominant as the boys," and does not manifest itself in as many fights among the girls as happens with the boys.
"Our main aim is to get them (boys and girls) to modify their behavior," he stressed.
He conceded that there are not enough police personnel available for the Safe Schools Programme, to be "in all the schools all the time," hence the stress on behavior modification, which would ultimately result in less reliance on police presence in the schools.
