Government Medical Consultants to be paid in 1st quarter of new financial year

The Government has authorised payment of retroactive salaries to Government Medical Consultants within the first quarter of the upcoming financial year.

The Ministry of Finance & The Public Service says payments will be made during the period April to June this year.

In a letter to the consultants, the ministry explained that the government is finalising the budget for the new fiscal year and until it is approved, a more specific date for payment cannot be provided.

The finance ministry has sought to reassure the medical consultants that they are valued and are not treated less than any other public sector group.

But it says the government has to operate within the legislative framework governing budgetary operations, including the fiscal rules which require that a targeted fiscal balance be met during the fiscal year.

Following an emergency meeting on February 16, the Medical Consultants Association said members were restive over unpaid retroactive salaries from the public sector Compensation Review.

The consultants claimed they had been victimized.

The Association said all other public sector groups, including parliamentarians, received their retroactive salaries within two months of being paid new rates under the compensation review.
