The Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU) is lending its support to members of the Jamaica Medical Doctors' Association (JMDA) and its call for an urgent ruling from the Industrial Disputes Tribunal (IDT) on their outstanding overtime dispute.
The JMDA has warned that there could be major disruption to the health sector if the IDT fails to hand down its decision by Friday, October 2.
In a statement Wednesday afternoon, the JCTU highlighted that the overtime impasse with the doctors was referred to the tribunal in January 2025 and has remained unresolved for nearly 21 months.
It said the case concluded on April 1 this year, leaving the affected doctors waiting almost six months for a ruling.
The JCTU said it strongly supports the association's demand for a timely resolution to the matter. It said an almost six-month wait after the conclusion of a case is far too long, particularly where the dispute concerns essential services, payment for work performed and the livelihood of workers.
It warned that workers must be able to rely on the institutions established to resolve their disputes within a reasonable period.
This delay, it added, also has implications for productivity.
The JCTU said the Ministry of Labour must address any administrative or resource constraints contributing to delays and support an effective, timely dispute resolution system.
