The six-month extension for data controllers to become compliant with the Data Protection Act, 2020 comes to an end today.
In light of this, the Office of the Information Commissioner has moved to remind the public that, as of Saturday, June 1, data controllers may register with the OIC for the first registration year, which runs from December 1, 2023 to November 30, 2024.
The OIC says, as part of the phased implementation of the Act, during the initial phase, commencing Saturday, through to August 31, primary focus will be on processing the registration applications of data controllers in specified priority groups as determined by the OIC.
First priority for registration will be given to all public authorities, all other data controllers processing personal data, including sensitive personal data or data related to criminal convictions, for an estimate of 10,000 or more data subjects.
Priority will also be given to those operating within the education, finance, health, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), tourism and hospitality sectors.
