Grange: Sexual harassment policy must be in place at all workplaces, institutions by month end

Gender Affairs Minister Olivia Grange is reminding operators of businesses and institutions that their sexual harassment policies must be in place by the end of this month.

The Sexual Harassment Prevention & Protection Act came into effect in July of last year, but businesses were given a year to establish the required policies in their enterprises.

Ms Grange, making her contribution to the Sectoral Debate on Tuesday,  encouraged fellow parliamentarians to reach out to business operators in their constituencies to ensure that they are compliant.

"The policy must be brought to the attention of  each worker, client, resident, ward, patient or member, as the case might require, because it also includes accommodations, churches, institutions, etc.," she explained.

She highlighted the fact that "any workplace or institution that fails to   implement such a policy, which should outline a process for reporting and resolving a complaint of sexual harassment, could face sanctions."

Tribunal named

Miss Grange also announced the names of members of the Sexual Harassment Tribunal.

It will be chaired by former Appeal Court Justice Ferdinand Smith, with attorneys at law Karen Campbell Bascoe and Indira Persaud serving as deputy chairs.

The Minister told the House that the Ministry of National Security had confirmed by letter, that all the nominees met the fit and proper eligibility requirements specified in the Sexual Harassment Prevention & Protection Act.
