Guyana submits final written brief to ICJ in border controversy case

Guyana has submitted the final written brief on the merits of its border controversy case with Venezuela to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Caracas is now expected to respond to the brief.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the brief was personally delivered to the Registrar of the Court by Guyana's Ambassador in Belgium.

Guyana initiated the case in March of 2018 following the decision by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres that he had chosen the ICJ as the means to be employed for the resolution of the controversy between the two countries.

Guyana and Venezuela have been at loggerheads over their shared border, with Venezuela claiming two thirds of the land mass of the CARICOM member - the Essequibo region - as its own.

Both sides agreed to halt hostilities following a meeting in St. Vincent and the Grenadines but the detente has not resulted in a cessation of provocation.
