Investigators from the Major Investigation Division and the Police High Command continue to piece together the circumstances that led to a double killing at Half Way Tree Police Station in St. Andrew on Monday.
A lawman and a businessman were killed in the incident.
They have been identified as 47-year-old Detective Sergeant Kevin Mayne, who was attached to the Half Way Tree CIB, and Dave Singh.
Senior Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, head of the police's Corporate Communications Unit, said the incident occurred about 5:45 p.m. Monday while the businessman was being transported to a cell.
"What we know as a fact is that the detective sergeant was in the process of transporting a businessman from the court - because he was attending court on a matter - taking him to his office. Sometime during the journey from the court to his office, he attacked the detective sergeant, a tussel ensued. During the tussel another police officer saw what was happening and intervened. During that process the businessman pulled the firearm from the officer and immediately fired a shot, and the sergeant was hit and he later died," she reported.
SSP Lindsay said the businessman then turned the firearm on himself.
Both men were pronounced dead at hospital.
SSP Lindsay said the Independent Commission of Investigations and the Inspector General are also probing the matter.
