Businessman Howard Mitchell and Mikael Phillips, Opposition Spokesman on Transport
Business executive Howard Mitchell is calling for institutions that oversee the operations at Jamaica's two main airports - Sangster International and Norman Manley International - to spend more time on ensuring that the operators are performing at the required standard.
His comment follows last week's temporary closure of the runway at the Sangster International, which resulted in several flights being either cancelled or diverted.
Hundreds of travellers were left stranded at the airport after they were informed that their flights had either been delayed or cancelled.
Mr Mitchell, a former Presiden of the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica, believes the incident arose from institutional neglect.
The seasoned businessman, who was speaking Sunday on Radio Jamaica's That's a Rap, also wants the operators of Norman Manley International Airport to do more to address structural deficiencies at that facility.
Protect image
The Parliamentary Opposition is also urging the Government to act swiftly and decisively to correct the deficiencies that have been exposed at the country's international airports.
Opposition Spokesman on Transport Mikael Phillips says he expects Transport Minister Daryl Vaz to do what is necessary to protect the country's image internationally after receiving the report on what led to last week's temporary closure of the runway at Sangster International.
Mr Vaz is to receive a full report today (Monday) from MBJ Airports, Operator of Sangster International, and other stakeholders on what led to last week's temporary closure of the runway.
