House Speaker addresses reprimand letter to Curtis, does not apologise

By Clinton McGregor

Speaker of the House of Representatives Juliet Holness has stated that her controversial letter of reprimand served on former Clerk to the Houses of Parliament Valrie Curtis, was not met as a sign of disrespect to the former Clerk.

The Parliamentary Opposition and the Jamaica Civil Service Association have been demanding that the Speaker withdraw the controversial letter, arguing that it was gross disrespect to the former civil servant who retired earlier this month.

Mrs. Holness addressed the matter on Tuesday afternoon, but did not issue an apology.

"Our differences in perspectives on a particular administrative matter and the resulting procedural communication to her, which was never placed on her HR record, but which has unfortunately been circulated in the public domain, was never intended to distract from her years of service and valuable contribution to the Parliament," said the House Speaker.

She continued, noting that she holds the retired clerk in high regard,  acknowledges her contribution and indelible mark on the Parliament, and would "not allow that to be overshadowed for any reason".
