Colonel Daniel Pryce, Director General of the Island Traffic Authority (ITA)
Director General of the Island Traffic Authority (ITA), Colonel Daniel Pryce, has sought to allay fears concerning the protection of data for motorists as the authorities roll out the new electronic motor vehicle registration system.
Effective Monday, July 21, motorists will receive certificates by email, accessible through Tax Administration Jamaica's online certificate generation and delivery service, doing away with physical certificates and the display of decals and stickers on the windshields of vehicles.
Colonel Pryce says the new digital platform can withstand cyber attacks.
"This system was developed by the Jamaica ICT Authority and they have spared no efforts with the necessary firewalls and the different redundancies in terms of protecting persons' data. It is also designed on the basis of the requirements of the Data Protection Act. Concerning the whole business of corrupt practices, this certainly should reduce that there is no cash transactions at any of our service hubs," he promised.
Motorists will also no longer be required to present physical copies of their documents during traffic stops.
On this premise, Colonel Pryce has assured that all stakeholders are trained and departments staffed to facilitate a smooth implementation.
"We will have sufficient staff to assist. We have, in fact, gone through the length of ensuring that each service hub has a public facing Wi-Fi and we will have a customer service rep there to assist persons who might be technologically challenged," he said.
Colonel Pryce was a guest Thursday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106 FM.
