World leaders have reacted with shock and sadness to the death of opposition leader and outspoken Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny.
Mr. Navalny died at a Russian prison today.
The prison service said he felt unwell after a walk and lost consciousness.
The stunning news comes less than a month before an election - expected to give Russian President Vladamir Putin another six years in power - and sparked renewed criticism and outrage directed at the Kremlin leader who has cracked down on all opposition at home.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said Russia is responsible for Mr. Navalny death.
But Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has accused Western leaders of rushing to judgment.
Mr. Navalny made global headlines when he was poisoned with a nerve agent in 2020.
The Russian opposition figure was sentenced to 19 years in prison in August. He was already serving sentences of 11-and-a-half years in a maximum security facility on fraud and other charges he denied.
